St. Stephen’s Celebrates Scouting America

St. Stephen’s and the Vine will celebrate Scout Sunday on February 1, 2026. John Kavanaugh, St. Stephen’s member and leader of Cub Scout Pack 743, shares this reflection on the Scouting program:

The next week will be a celebration of the 116th anniversary of Scouting America, formerly known as The Boy Scouts of America.

The Scouting movement was started in 1908 in England by Lord Baden Powell.  His wive Olave is credited as being the founder of the Girl Guides a few years later.

Scouting came to the United States in 1910, becoming the Boy Scouts of America, now Scouting America.  The Girl Guides became the Girl Scouts thanks to Juliet Gordon Lowe.

We’ve seen a lot of change in 116 years, yet much is still the same. The Oath and Law are virtually unchanged from Baden Powell’s original. The motto, Be Prepared, and the slogan, Do A Good Turn Daily, have been around as long as can be remembered.

At our ten o’clock service this Sunday, Feb. 1, we will have members of our Cub Scout pack, pack 743, helping with the service.  They’ll help the ushers, read the lessons, lead the psalm, and just be around to help.

If you are in Scouting currently, or have been in the past, please wear your uniform or other “Scoutwear” to church Sunday.

Sunday, Feb. 8, is the official anniversary date of Scouting America. Happy 116th birthday Scouts!
