Scout Leaders Honored

by John Kavanaugh, St. Stephen’s member and Scout leader

Two leaders from the Scouting America units that meet at St. Stephen’s recently received awards for their leadership efforts and example.

Khary Floyd (pictured left), Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 743, which St. Stephen’s is their chartered partner, and William Saunders (pictured right), Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 749 and Advisor of Venturing Crew 2749, received the Polaris Award.

The Polaris Award is the North Star District’s District Award of Merit, the highest award a volunteer leader can receive at the district level.

Khary founded the Cub Scout Pack with the idea that this area was underserved and needed a unit that did not meet during traditional time. The pack meets on Saturdays. Most packs meet on weekdays or week nights. The pack has seen continued growth and success under his leadership even after his reassignment to other areas of the city for his career.

William was instrumental in recruiting for and forming Troop 749G in 2019. He has been a strong example of leadership and service, helping new Scouts learn basic scouting skills and leading several young men and women to earn the Eagle Scout rank, Scouting’s highest achievement.

William recently took on the role of Advisor for Crew 2749 and is a faculty advisor for the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity at Washington University in St. Louis. He is also a merit badge counselor and North Star District’s photographer in residence.

Congratulations to Khary and William on their well earned and most deserved awards.
